90210: Trevor Donovan to Play "Teddy"

Remember that guy we exclusively revealed would be Ethan's replacement on 90210? Well, here's what he looks like!

His name is Trevor Donovan, and you might recognize him from a stint on Days of Our Lives as bad boy Jeremy Horton or from his days as an Abercrombie and Fitch model (Google will help you out if you need the photographic evidence, pervs).

Producers have tapped Donovan to play suave, charming Teddy, who is a tennis prodigy and the son of a movie star. Teddy sounds like what Steve Sanders was supposed to be, before they cast Ian Ziering and then they were like: OK, he'll be the funny one!

Donovan will hit the ground running, as we hear he'll be all up in Annie's grill within minutes of 90210's 8 p.m. return on Tuesday, September 8.

JoAnna Garcia to Woo Gossip Girl's Nate

Privileged's perky JoAnna Garcia will give Gossip Girl something rather juicy to talk about this fall, in a four-episode arc on the CW series.

Akin to how Madchen Amick kicked off last season with a limited run as a new love interest for Nate, Garcia will do the honors this time, playing Bree, a Miss America-like Southern belle whose progressive lifestyle belies her conservative roots.

Oh, and speaking of roots: Garcia will return to her blonde Reba look for her bit of Gossip (for those who track such things).

Gossip Girl returns Monday, Sept. 14, now at 9 pm/ET.

Ratings: America Remembers Farrah and Michael

Viewers were drawn to their televisions on Thursday night as multiple networks fast-tracked special programming paying tribute to Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson, both of whom passed away earlier in the day.

ABC's special 20/20 broadcast dedicated to Fawcett — and featuring an exclusive sit-down with the love of the actress' life, Ryan O'Neal — drew 8.23 million total viewers at 10 pm, making it the evening's second-most watched program (edged out only by a CSI repeat).

Also at 10, Dateline NBC's own remembrance of Fawcett drew 5.8 mil.

Of the Jackson tributes, CBS' 10 pm special delivered 7.6 mil, while ABC's and NBC's 9 o'clock profiles did 5.7 mil and 5.2 mil, respectively.

Elsewhere on Thursday, So You Think You Can Dance — which made note of all three tragic losses this week, Ed McMahon's included, and showed a "Thriller" clip - drew 6.9 mil.

Connie Britton Cheers Friday Night Lights' Future Game Plan

A rather glorious thing happened in March, when TV's acclaimed if undersampled Friday Night Lights was renewed for not one but two more seasons. Although the series' NBC return is a small eternity away (summer 2010) and its DirecTV premiere is still "TBD," we tackled the opportunity to speak with Connie Britton about Tami's "roller coaster" past, and apparently finite future

Color me shocked that Katherine Heigl isn't leaving Grey's Anatomy. Is it possible we're being duped in some way? — Krista
MATT: I must say that the lack of fanfare surrounding ABC's confirmation of Heigl's status — especially when juxtaposed with the flurry of official statements regarding T.R. Knight's departure — made me raise one of my overgrown eyebrows. "Sure, she's staying... for just one more episode," I cynically hypothesized. But one of my best sources insists that this is not a case of clever semantics, and that Heigl's Izzie will have a significant presence in the fall.

Please give me some scoop on what's next for Desperate Housewives' Bree. — Fernando R.
MICKEY: Bree may come off like a brittle maneater, but at heart she's a real softy, which is why juggling an angry Orson and a horny Karl will really wear on her this fall. Who will she turn to in this time of need? An old friend who you might have thought was out of the picture.

Is Khandi Alexander returning to CSI: Miami as a regular cast member for the 2009-10 season? — Rob
TIM: I see where you're going: With Dr. Tara Price likely out of the picture, why not bring back her predecessor? Alexander's people, however, say that, at least for now, she isn't scheduled to return. She will be a series regular, however, on Treme, the yet-to-be-scheduled HBO series about post-Katrina New Orleans from The Wire mastermind David Simon.

What happened to Gina Ravera on The Closer? She was there at the end of last season, but now she has disappeared. — Shawn
MATT: As you have since gleaned from this week's Gabriel-centric episode, Ravera's Det. Daniels was the casualty of the apparently very bitter break-up between the two MCD members, and now she won't even read David's letters. When I asked Corey Reynolds if we might see Daniels/Ravera at all this season, he said, "Not to my knowledge."

Can we assume that Gossip Girl's Serena won't be attending Brown now that she's off chasing Daddy Dearest? — Becky
MICKEY: Here's what Blake Lively told us about Serena's plans in the wake of being slapped with that paternal jaw-dropper. "She's thrown for this huge loop," she says. "There are a lot of things she's going to find out about her mother and about her background." In other words, Serena will not be heading to Providence in the fall... but she might not be in New York either.

Will Rachael Leigh Cook return to Psych as the schoolteacher for whom Shawn is hot? Or will he redirect his attention to the lovely Jules? — Mike
I heard that Supernatural's Jim Beaver is filming an episode of Psych. Is this true? — Candy
TIM: Cook does indeed return, but why limit Shawn's options? We've seen an upcoming script where another foxy lady spits some game in his direction — just before undergoing an exorcism. When a hellion tells you you're hot, you know she knows her stuff. And yes, Beaver turns up in the episode "High Noon-ish" as Stinky Pete, a character involved in the Old Sonoma Town mystery of the Ghost Rider. Psych's fourth season premieres Aug. 7.

Do you know if One Tree Hill plans to cast an African-American or other minority in any of the roles being added? — Dee Bee
MATT: Thus far, you're 0-for-2 on that wish, seeing as Robert Buckley and Shantel VanSanten have been cast as Nathan's agent and Haley's sister, Quinn, respectively. As for "Alex" (the supermodel fronting Brooke's new clothing line), Tree Hill is looking at "all ethnicities," so there's some hope there. For what's it worth, I can offer up this concrete piece of guest casting: NFL legend Jerry Rice will appear as himself in the Sept. 14 season opener.

Please tell me that HBO's Entourage is going to have more than the traditional 12 episodes this season — S.S.
MICKEY: It's just the dirty dozen, S.S., starting July 12 at 10 pm/ET. As Season 6 revs up, it's all about the lay-deez. Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui) is back to carry E's testicles around in her Fendi clutch; Alexis Dziena plays a hookup gone wrong; Jamie-Lynn Sigler is back as herself, and is still dating Turtle. And Jami Gertz is on board as the wife of Gary Cole's schlumpy agent. And she's a hoot!

I cannot wait for Leverage to start back up! Any preseason nuggets? — Lorinda
TIM: The July 15 premiere offers some of the show's sharpest, funniest writing yet, and finds the gang drawn together by the sound of music. Specifically Sophie's appearance in a Boston staging of The Sound of Music that's so bad one reviewer says it "made me root for the Nazis." We're also treated to the spectacle of Nate's latest crusade almost falling into his lap but instead flipping over and bursting into flame in front of him. Need more incentive to tune in? Parker dresses as a nun with a garter.

MATT: My name is Matt and I would like to say yes... but no, Privileged was not picked up for the fall. 'Tis a shame, too, since a little birdie tells me the following was on tap: Upon learning of Megan's season-ending sexual indiscretion, Will was going to succumb to a Chuck Bass-like downward spiral; Megan was going to sleep with boss man Robert Buckley, despite it being a less-than-savvy career move; and Megan was going to get a Samantha Jones-type gal pal who, by-the-by, was bedding Will's pop!

Is there a shot for the CW to pick up Body Politic as a midseason replacement? From the sneak peeks I've seen, it looks like it's got lots of promise, and I really need a weekly Jason Dohring fix! — Gina
MICKEY: I'm with you, Gina! Body reminds me of the heady mid-'90s, when I actually called Washington, D.C., home (in large part because of the movie St. Elmo's Fire). My CW mole tells me that the Beltway drama is still in the running for a midseason slot, but that it's up against the Gossip Girl spin-off, which has a few high-ranking fans in the building.

I loved the Breaking Bad season finale. Any preview of what's to come in Season 3? — Anne
TIM: "There's going to be a lot of guilt there and big opportunities for big, crazy stuff to happen," says Aaron Paul. He tells us Jesse will be distraught over the death of his girlfriend, while Jane's dad (played by wonderful Season 2 addition John de Lancie) is guilty he didn't rush her to rehab. Also, Walt just might feel guilt over the plane crash that deposited two bodies in his yard — assuming he ever finds out he's at fault. Look for our full Q&A with Paul very soon.

Tim's Mega Rave: Conan O'Brien fans who worried that Triumph the Insult Comic Dog wouldn't play at 11:30 can stop worrying — his Tonight Show interviews at the Bonnaroo festival ranked among his best. To paraphrase the old saying, you can't teach an old dog new tricks, or new jokes. And that's fine with us.

Mickey's Mini Rant: In my day, TV alcoholism was marked by "very special" episodes and badly acted stumbling-and-hiccuping scenes. Not anymore. In Nurse Jackie, FlashForward and Melrose Place, characters flaunt their sobriety like some kind of badge of honor. Winners never quit, TV people! (Hic.)

Smallville Casting News: Callum Blue Has Zod Complex

Kneel before Callum Blue. The alum of such shows as Related, The Tudors and Secret Diary of a Call Girl has been tapped to join Smallville in the series regular role of big, bad Zod, says the Hollywood Reporter. He'll first appear in the Season 9 premiere, airing Sept. 25.

A criminal castoff from the planet Krypton, Zod was memorably played on the big screen in Superman II by Terence Stamp (who, like Blue, is British). On Smallville, Stamp has somewhat ironically voiced Clark's biological father, Jor-El.

Zod's Smallville return (he possessed Lex/was played by Michael Rosenbaum in Season 6) was forecast in the CW series' Season 8 finale, when Tess saw the villain rise from a fiery "Z" on the Luthor manse's lawn.

Zod, however, is not the only baddie the Red-Blue Blur will need to face this fall. As exclusively reported by TVGuide.com, Brian Austin Green will bring Metallo to town for the first two episodes of Season 9.

Scrubs' Judy Reyes Expecting First Child

Judy Reyes, who plays Carla on Scrubs, is expecting her first child with her boyfriend, filmmaker George Valencia.

Reyes is four months' along, says her rep, and is due in November.

When Scrubs returns in December for a ninth season, Reyes' on-screen husband, Donald Faison, will front the rejiggered show, as Turk takes a teaching job at the med school that will serve as the series' new setting.

Although Reyes was at first not expected to participate in Season 9, sources say she has since reached a tentative agreement to appear in some episodes

Scrubs' Next Season Heads for the Classroom

When Scrubs returns for its somewhat unexpected ninth season this fall on ABC, the show will make a move from the halls of Sacred Heart to those of a medical school — with Christopher Turk (played by Donald Faison) and Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) leading the way.

"It's going to be a different show," creator Bill Lawrence told EW's Ausiello. "It'll still be life-and-death stakes, but if the show is just Scrubs again in the hospital with a different person's voiceover, it would be a disaster, and people would be mad."

While Cox and Turk will now be teaching and the setting will be new, don't mourn the old Scrubs too much. Lawrence promises that now and then, students will visit Sacred Heart — where they might run into such original cast members as Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes and Ken Jenkins, who will all return as guests throughout the season.

Yet, at least half the cast on the new Scrubs will be new hires, among which there will likely be a heavyweight actor. "[ABC] is really after us to hire a big name," Lawrence said. "So one of them will be fairly famous."

NCIS

CBS' NCIS spin-off will be Living Dangerously with the addition of Linda Hunt to its cast.

Though this news comes on the heels of Louise Lombard being dropped from the NCIS: Los Angeles ensemble, Hunt is not replacing Lombard's Agent Macy per se. Rather, the Academy Award winner is coming on board as a new character not seen in the backdoor pilot that aired as two May episodes of NCIS proper.

Hunt will play a former film-industry technician who now oversees the support staff at the L.A.-based Office of Special Projects. There, she will outfit Special Agents Callen (Chris O'Donnell), Hanna (LL Cool J) et al with micro surveillance cameras and other gee-whiz gadgets.

In other words, she's Q, just with a lower voice register.

In the NCIS: LA pilot (aka the NCIS episodes "Legend, Part 1" and "Legend, Part 2"), Lombard's Macy was a former major in the military police-tuned-investigator. It is unclear at this time whether that role will be recast, or Macy replaced on the OSP team.

USA Network is rebroadcasting the aforementioned pair of NCIS episodes this Friday night.

Hunt, who won a supporting actress Oscar for 1982's The Year of Living Dangerously, recently recurred on TV's The Unit and Without a Trace.

I only have one question about the NCIS finale: Is Cote de Pablo returning to the show next season? — B.C.
MATT: Why, did it look like Ziva was on death's doorstep in that secretly filmed torture scene? If so, think back to what NCIS boss Shane Brennan said about that grim cliff-hanger: Come September, "all will be revealed and you will be surprised. It will come at you from left field." (But, in a word: Yes. Sources whisper to me that Cote will be back.) Bonus buzzlet: Season 6 arrives on DVD Aug. 25!

Please tell us the rumors aren't true, and that Desperate Housewives isn't going with a melodramatic miscarriage storyline for Lynette. — Steph
MICKEY: Egads, this is morbid, Steph, but let's retrace our steps: Marc Cherry has said that he thinks a mother losing a child would be rich territory for the show to cover. From the season finale — and just about every other episode of the series — we can deduce that Lynette clearly does not like being pregnant. But what if she suddenly does... and then she isn't? These are good questions to ask. Methinks you might be on to something.

I'm sad to hear that A&E has canceled The Beast. As much as I love Patrick Swayze, I have to wonder: Did they consider hiring a new lead before axing the entire show? — Tracy
TIM: A&E says they never considered anyone to front Season 2 but Swayze. The network faced a dilemma: It didn't want to appear pessimistic about Swayze's health, but it also didn't want to look like it cared more about The Beast (and its potential revenue) than its star. Ultimately, the uncertainty about Swayze's battle with pancreatic cancer — coupled with low ratings — made it unfeasible for the show to go on.

What's the deal with the NCIS spin-off's name? It's a completely different show than the original and a title reflecting the special tech ops or undercover nature would have made more sense. Any chance they'll change the name before the season starts? — Fran
MATT: I just quadruple-checked, and the answer is: Not a chance. NCIS: Los Angeles it is (though I reserve the right to abbreviate it NCIS: LA).

I think the new FBI agent on Fringe should be played by Sarah Wayne Callies! — Dea
MICKEY: The Prison Break alumna is an interesting thought, but I had another, and I'm not the only one. Taking into account how many fans of The Wire there are in Hollywood (see: every guest star on The Office; Lance Reddick's career), wouldn't it be fun to see Sonja Sohn as Fringe's new Fed? It's true that Brothers & Sisters didn't give her a lot to do, but I think her level-headed vulnerability would work well among J.J. Abrams' freak-show ensemble.

Can we expect any bonding between Shawn and Henry in the new season of Psych? — Kelly
TIM: Yes. In fact, things get a bit too close as Henry tries to interject himself into Shawn's love life. Speaking of bonding, fans can also look forward to an episode featuring Heroes' Sendhil Ramamurthy and his real-life cousin, Jay Chandrasekhar, as, yup, cousins. Ramamurthy plays a man who believes he's cursed, while his cousin is directing a local theater's Bollywood project. Adding to the parallels, Chandrasekhar also directs the episode, airing in August.

Please, do you have anything — anything — about Smallville? Please? Please! — Gabriela
MATT: I shall reward your repeated use of the word "please" by sharing a provocative bit of intel I just stumbled across. A source tells me that although Sam Witwer was invited back for Season 9 — for possibly several episodes — at this time the portrayer of Davis/Doomy has no plans to return.

Who's going to hook up with the new stud on 90210? Please say Kelly. — Rosemary
MICKEY: Kelly?! She will be his guidance counselor, Rosemary, you perv! Don't make me go all "Palin" on you. As usual, I'm hearing that Annie and Naomi will scratch each other's eyes out volleying for the tennis stud's attention, but that his love will belong to Silver, who returns to feisty form this season. (Any suggestions for who should play Teddy's Clooney-esque movie-star dad? I'm thinking Peter Gallagher would totally rock it.)

Can you give me any scoops on the upcoming season of ??The Secret Life of the American Teenager? I heard some rumors about a death! — Christina
TIM: Those aren't just rumors, Christina. Someone dies, and the death affects pretty much everyone on the show. You can also expect conflict between Ben and Ricky as they try to share dad duties, and a baby for Molly Ringwald's Anne Jeurgen — which means her child and her grandson (the baby born to 15-year-old Amy last season) will grow up together. The new season premieres June 22.

It was nice to see some Stargate Universe scoop in last week's column. So... got any more? — Brad
MATT: How about this? Reiko Aylesworth, dropped from ABC's The Forgotten, has bounced back with a possibly recurring role on the Sci Fi series. As who? Stargate auteur Joseph Mallozzi tells the Buzz, "Let's just say that her character, Sharon, is someone very important in Camille Wray's (Ming-Na) life." (P.S. Camille is a lesbian.)

I can't wait for Entourage to return. Will we see more of Jamie-Lynn Sigler? — Tony
MICKEY: After rolling my eyes at last season's trumped-up Medellin storyline (did anyone think that movie looked good?), I was relieved to find out that Season 6 (debuting Sunday, July 12 on HBO) fast-forwards past the filming of Scorsese's Gatsby remake. In the first episode, in fact, Vince pays Jay Leno a visit to promote the flick. But guess what, Tony? As reported in this week's Mega Minute, Jamie-Lynn is still in the picture — and will be for much of the season, as a very different Turtle emerges from his shell. (See what I did there?)

What is the overall tone of the upcoming TNT series Dark Blue? Is it similar to such intensely character-driven cop/suspense dramas as The Shield and NYPD Blue, or is it more in the vein of dramedies like Burn Notice and Leverage? — Alex
MATT: I have to tell you, I begrudgingly popped Dark Blue (premiering July 15) into my Sony Watchman DVD player the other day, and I was pleasantly surprised. The series — about a team of undercover cops headed by Dylan McDermott — is grittier in tone than, say, Leverage, though I wouldn't say it hits Shield-like depths of stark realism. My only quibble is Supernatural alum Nicki Aycox's "accent," which sounds to me like "Oklahoma by way of Melbourne."

Mickey's Mega Rave: True Blood's second-season premiere laid out at least three strong story arcs: the unveiling of Maryann and her true mission in Bon Temps; Jason's blind devotion to the anti-vampire Fellowship of the Sun; and the formation of Bill, Sookie and Jessica's hilarious surrogate family unit. Not a weak thread in the tapestry.

Matt's Mini Rant: I'm one of The Closer's biggest fans and a cat person, but really now: Gimme less Kitty, more Fritz. Two weeks into the new season, Brenda's new hubby has yet to contribute in a significant way, while her ailing tabby tabulates more screen time. Hiss!

Scott Caan, William Fichtner and Matt Letscher have signed on to guest-star on Entourage's upcoming sixth season, it has been confirmed.

Caan will play Scotty Lavin, a talent manager who becomes E's headache this season. Fichtner (Prison Break) takes on the role of slick TV producer Phil Yagoda, who is trying to remake his hit 1990s teen series for Drama. Letscher, who got some confusing screen time opposite Calista Flockhart on Brothers and Sisters this season, plays Dan Coakley, a TV exec who oversees Drama's TV series.

Entourage returns Sunday, July 12 at 10:30 pm/ET.

Friends had a really great one, with the humor, Ross and Rachel, Phoebe's crazyiness, etc... One of the best episodes! I really love the scene in Ross's apartment's, after Rachel get out of the plane. It gave me shivers. One of the best R+R moments.
Monica and Chandler are also greats in this episode, finnaly having the baby they wanted so much. I laughed so hard with that "Eight is Enough" thing,I love Monica and her stuff.
Phoebe was hilarious, like always. The "Racheel" scream, she driving the taxi, and telling Mike she would steal one of the babys... And Joey... Always thinking of food XD Great episode!

The Shield is going out in style: The dearly departed cop drama leads the Television Critics Association Awards with four nominations.

The Shield, which ended its seven-season run in November, will battle Lost, Mad Men, Saturday Night Live and Battlestar Galactica for the coveted Program of the Year. The Shield was also nominated for best drama series, best drama acting (Walter Goggins) and the Heritage Award, which honors series that have made a cultural impact. ER, M*A*S*H, Saturday Night Live and Star Trek are the other Heritage Award nominees.

The Shield's drama-series competition includes Breaking Bad, Friday Night Lights, Lost and Mad Men.

On the comedy front, TCA likes 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, The Daily Show, How I Met Your Mother and The Office. Stars from four of those shows — Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Jim Parsons, Neil Patrick Harris and Steve Carell — will face off for comedy-acting honors.

Fringe, The Mentalist, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, True Blood and The United States of Tara are up for best new program.

Meet the New Doctor Who's New Companion

I think I'm turning British-ese. On the heels of our report that BBC America is bringing new batches of Doctor Who and Torchwood to U.S. shores this summer, we now have news as to who will be playing the new Doctor Who's companion in Season 5.

Relative unknown Karen Gillan has been tapped to accompany incoming Doctor Matt Smith on the TARDIS' next series of adventures, premiering on the BBC in 2010.

"I am absolutely over the moon," the pretty Scot tells BBC News of her good fortune. "I just can't wait to get started."

Gillan is not a complete stranger to the Whoniverse, having played a soothsayer in the Season 4 episode "The Fires of Pompeii."

She also may be familiar from her run on the U.K. sketch series The Kevin Bishop Show.

Incoming show runner Steven Moffat says that although they auditioned a bevy of "amazing actresses," as soon as Gillan walked through into the room, "the game was up. [She's] funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy."

The choice of Gillan to accompany Smith is fitting, as Smith is also a relatively fresh face to audiences. In fact, Smith is the youngest actor to ever play Doctor. He succeeds David Tennant, who last Lords over time in the five specials arriving on BBCA starting this summer.

Ratings: Jon & Kate Deliver a Big Plus!

See what just a little bit of ink will get you? The Season 5 premiere of TLC's Jon & Kate Plus 8 delivered 9.8 million total viewers — the cabler's largest audience ever, and its best draw since an April 2003 Trading Spaces special. It's also more than double what the increasingly dysfunctional parents scored with their previous, less tabloidy premiere.

Leading out of Jon & Kate, TLC's Cake Boss only held on to 3.2 million viewers for its premiere. (Hey, maybe people prefer sour over sweet?)

Other recent ratings notes:

Harper's Island on Saturday night scored 3.89 mil, besting America's Most Wanted and a Southland repeat, but not ABC's NBA finals coverage.

On Monday, The Bachelorette made a date with 6 mil, down markedly from last week's premiere. ABC's Here Come the Newlyweds in turn debuted to 4.98 mil, placing third far behind a CSI: Miami rerun (7.76 mil) and a fresh Medium (7.75 mi).
